It seems like recently I've seen more and more so called Christians proclaiming that people who are gay/lebian/transgender are doomed to hell. Maybe this has been happening with great intensity for sometime now and I'm only recently becoming aware of it. Either way, it really pisses me off.
I have two major points with this idea. My first point deals with the basis of their arguement. Many fundamentalists can pull a verse or two out of the Bible and show you in text (a topic for a future rant) how homosexuality is a sin and unnatural. Leviticus 18:22 is often quoted.
This is the flaw. If you want to quote the bible and take it 100% literal, you better be able to walk your talk. For example, in the Bible women are often viewed as not equal to men and even as only servants. So, does this mean that we should treat them as such today? I want to see some of these people tell their wives and girlfriends not to vote, work outside the house, and obey their every word. It's not going to happen!
This is my favorite. Using THE SAME BOOK of Leviticus that condems homosexuals to hell, we can see similiar condeming verses.
1. Don't eat shrimp or any other shellfish. (Lev. 11:10)
2. You cannot approach the alter of God if you wear glasses. (Lev. 21:20)
3. Guys- don't trim your beard. (Lev. 19:27)
4. Don't plant two crops in the same field or wear clothes made out of more than one material. (Lev. 19:19)
5. To have sex with a slave girl, you must pay her master. Prostitution? (Lev. 19:20)
These aren't even the juiciest ones, but the point is that these all come from THE SAME BOOK within the bible. You can't ignore these equally important versus. If you want to take the Bible literally, go for it. Just know this- it is impossible. The Bible constantly contridicts itself. Maybe we should use the Bible as a guide book and not a law book?
My second and last point may be most important. If you are a Christian and want to use the Bible to tell people they are going to hell, pay close attention to this next sentence.
"There is no sin greater than another." Jesus makes this very clear, as does the rest of the bible.
That's right, the man himself - the man at the very core of Christianity said it. Are you going to throw that out? Are you sin free? I didn't think so.
Well, I guess you're going to hell too. Maybe you should get your life in order before you pass judgement on others.
